The first living nativity scene is Italian and originated in Greccio.
The first representation of the Nativity in history dates back to 1223. It was created by Saint Francis in the town of Rieti, Italy. The first living nativity scene in history was set up in Greccio, a small town in the province of Rieti. The first representation of the Nativity was organized in 1223 by Saint Francis of Assisi with the help of Giovanni Velita, the castellan of the town. In 1209, Saint Francis visited Greccio for the first time. The saint had managed to end serious calamities that had befallen the town, including wolf attacks, and he had built a hut on Mount Lacerone, which would later become known as Mount San Francesco, where a commemorative chapel was erected in 1712. Starting from 1217, the nobleman Giovanni Velita became one of Saint Francis's closest friends, to the extent that he asked him to come closer to the city to allow everyone to hear his teachings. The desire to reenact the birth of Jesus matured in 1223, after Saint Francis's journey to Palestine. To Saint Francis, Greccio reminded him of Bethlehem, so he expressed the desire to celebrate Christmas night in those places. Saint Francis then entrusted Castellan Velita with choosing a cave where a manger would be built and where an ox and a donkey would be brought. According to hagiographies, during the Mass, a child would appear in the manger, whom Saint Francis would hold in his arms. On December 24, 1223, the first living nativity scene in history was thus created, making the town of Greccio, nestled among the rocks at an altitude of 700 meters, famous worldwide. Since 1972, the living nativity scene has been organized by the Pro Loco of the small town in the province of Rieti. Some of the dialogues are taken from the texts of Saint Francis's first biographer, Tommaso Celano, and the representation is divided into 6 living scenes, where every detail is meticulously cared for, from period costumes borrowed from the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma to the evocative scenery, made even more magical by the beauty of the location. The historical reenactment of the first nativity scene in history, created in Greccio, is certainly an unmissable event and a unique spectacle in the world. |
