In 1968 the art critic Germano Celant coined the term Arte Povera to describe the work and the attitudes of a group of Italian artists. Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Gilberto Zorio were directly engaging with objects, interacting with their audiences, and taking innovative and radical stances while creating new forms of sculpture and painting. "Poor Art" was their response to a world in agitation, political unrest, and massive cultural change. We will look at some key moments in the history of Arte Povera and highlight the work of Giuseppe Penone, who is the subject of a major exhibition entitled Rivers of Form, on view now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art through February 26, 2023
