Bernard Aikema, Art History Professor

Picture
The Church of San Zaccaria and its adjacent convent have many stories to tell. The crypt houses eight tombs of early doges and its convent, now carabinieri headquarters, was famous for its cosseted and pampered nuns from wealthy families. In his talk, Professor Aikema will show how the church of San Zaccaria owes its exceptional ensemble of architecture, altarpieces, decoration and choir stalls to the family of Doge Foscari.  A recently discovered wooden crucifix, the subject of a current joint conservation project by Venice in Peril, the America-Italy Society of Philadelphia and the Dutch Committee, is an important element in the whole.  This talk will be held jointly with Venice in Peril and the Dutch Committee on zoom.

Bio: Bernard Aikema is Professor of Art History at the University of Verona and has been a visiting professor at Princeton and Harvard Universities in the United States. Dr. Aikema is an authority on Venetian art of the 15th to18th centuries and the diffusion of the Renaissance throughout Europe. He has written more than twenty books and exhibition catalogues and has published over 180 scholarly articles. Originally from the Netherlands, he received his PhD from the University of Amsterdam. Dr. Aikema is the President of the Netherlands Foundation for the Saveguarding of Venice and is Ufficiale nell’Ordine del Merito of the Italian Republic.

Held jointly with Venice in Peril (UK) and the Netherlands Foundation for the Safeguarding of Venice.
