William J. Ward Jr. 2026 Scholarship

The America-Italy Society of Philadelphia is proud to dedicate its 2026 Scholarship in honor of William J. Ward, Jr., a beloved member of our AIS community whose lifelong passion for learning, culture, art, and Italy inspired all who knew him, both at the Society and beyond.

A native of Camden, New Jersey, William served his country honorably in the United States Army, earned a degree from Drexel University, and enjoyed a distinguished professional career before retiring as CEO of the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia. A devoted family man, historian, traveler, artist, and lifelong learner, he embraced every stage of life with curiosity, enthusiasm, and joy.

William was an active student of the Italian language at AIS-Phila from 2014 through the fall of 2025, pursuing his studies and travels to Italy until illness prevented him from continuing. His love of Italy extended beyond language study; he traveled extensively throughout Europe and, in his later years, developed a passion for painting. The America-Italy Society of Philadelphia was honored to host two exhibitions of his artwork inspired by Italy in 2022 and again from 2024–2025.

The William J. Ward, Jr. 2026 Scholarship celebrates Bill’s enduring commitment to the Italian language, cultural exchange and artistic expression. Through this scholarship, AIS-Phila is supporting three outstanding students in their study abroad experience in Rome, Italy while honoring William’s legacy to encourage future generations to pursue the same spirit of discovery, learning, and connection that defined his remarkable life and the America-Italy Society’s mission.

“The America-Italy Society is dedicated to fostering connections between the United States and Italy through language, educational programs, arts, cultural exchange and community engagement”
