BEGINNER
Development of basic language skills. Introduction to fundamental grammatical structures with emphasis on speaking, listening comprehension and elementary writing assignments. Conducted in Italian and English. No prerequisites.

101 -Beginner I
Program: First contacts. The others and I. Buon appetito! Spare time. Grammar: Articles, Adjectives, Names, Numbers, Present tense of regular verbs

102 – Beginner II
Program: Spare time. At the hotel. Around Italy. Let’s go on vacation. Grammar: Present tense of irregular verbs, Time and Place prepositions, the date, Direct Pronouns, Present Perfect tense.

103 – Beginner III
Program: Italy!, A Day with my Family. Tastes of Italy. Daily life. Shopping. Grammar: Present Perfect tense, Superlative, Impersonal Constructions, Indirect Pronouns, Reflexive Verbs, Adverbs, comparatives

104 – Beginner IV  

Program: Seasons; Trip in Sicily. Reflexive verbs and past tenses, Direct pronouns, Comparatives, the pronoun “si” and “ci”, Adverbs.

ELEMENTARY
Continued study of grammar and syntax with emphasis on more advanced structural principles. More extensive readings on cultural, social, and literary topics and viewing of videos will form the basis for class discussions and written work. Conducted in Italian with some English.

201 – Elementary I
Program: Hai voglia di uscire?; Buone vacanze!; Ti sta benissimo! Mi sento bene. Grammar: Avverbi di quantita’, i pronomi indiretti, il superlativo relativo e assoluto, stare + gerundio, le espressioni di tempo con tra, fra, da, fa; passato prossimo di piacere; imperfetto, avverbi di tempo; i verbi uscire, dare; c’era e c’erano; i dimostrativi questo e quello; preposizione di + materiali; passato prossimo e pronomi diretti; l’aggettivo bello;l’imperativo; i sostantivi in -ista -col -go -io; i verbi sapere e potere.

202 – Elementary II
Program: Auguri!; Cambi casa?; Buon appettito!; Ultime notizie.. Grammar:  aggettivi e pronomi indefiniti; pronome relativo che; usi di “ci” e “ne”; comparativo; imperativo con i pronomi “ci” e “ne”; il condizionale; verbi impersonali servire, volerci, bastare, e bisognare; il verbo metterci; l’aggettivo buono; il passato prossimo dei verbi modali; la frase negativa con nessuno.

203 – Elementary III
Program: Cosa fai nella vita?; L’amore e’ …; Vivere insieme; Godiamoci la natura! Grammar: La costruzione stare per + infinito; frasi secondarie con prima di + infinito; Verbo + preposizione + infinito o complemento; costruzione con “si” + verbi riflessivi; il verbo riuscire; il futuro; pronome relativo cui; ce l’ho, ce l’hai; preposizione con i mezzi di trasporto; quale; passato prossimo con ne.

INTERMEDIATE
Focus on aspects of Italian culture, history and social issues through the reading of a contemporary novel, short stories, and selected articles. Emphasis on expanding vocabulary, reviewing and improving advanced grammatical structures. Course work includes oral and written assignments. Conducted in Italian

301 – Intermediate I
Program: Review grammatical structures: articles, nouns, and adjectives, indicative mood of regular and irregular verbs. How to talk about facts.

302 Intermediate II
Program: Review of grammatical structures, first part: subjunctive mood and idiomatic expressions; how to express opinions.

303 – Intermediate III
Program: Review of
grammatical structures, second part: subjunctive mood and idiomatic expressions; how to express opinions.

Conversation: 304 – Intermediate IV

Program: Constant review of grammar and a lot of conversation.
Reading Book: Audiobook or  Contemporary Italian Literature. TBA $30

ADVANCED

401 and 402– Advanced
Program: Conversation with some reviewing of grammar.
Reading Book: Contemporary Italian Literature. TBA. $30

BOOK CLUB

Sara’ organizzato come un book club tradizionale ma il libro sara’ letto e discusso lungo le 10 lezioni del corso (invece che a completamento della lettura di tutto il libro, come si fa di solito).
Questo permette di approfondire la psicologia dei diversi personaggi, la situazione socio-economica dell’Italia che viene caratterizzata nel libro, la trama ovviamente, e anche la lingua (che invece viene in genere trascurata nei book club).
Il libro sara’ scelto tra le ultime pubblicazioni di romanzi italiani. In genere il costo del libro e’ di $30

TUITION$290 for a 10 weeks SUMMER course

$350 for a 12 weeks course

Payable by check or credit card to the America-Italy Society.

Classes meet for one hour and half. If there are 2 – 3 students, classes will meet for one hour (10 weeks); if only 1 student, the course will become private (one hour for 7 weeks). Enrollment is contingent upon advanced payment for course and materials. To be eligible for a refund, student must contact the office at least 24 hours before the first class. After the first class, only a credit for the next session will be issued (a $30.00 per class is retained by the School). No credit is issued after the end of the 4th week of classes. The Society reserves the right to cancel a class as circumstances demand; in this case unused tuition will be refunded.
